Wednesday, February 5, 2014 - Trip to Sundarbans - day 3 - from Khulna back to Dhaka

Khulna is the 3rd largest city in Bangladesh after Dhaka and Chittagong. Often referred to as Industrial City it is one of the important industrial and commercial areas of the country. The city has an estimated population of 1,000,000.
We stayed at the City Inn. Amongst other things we were impressed that, after nice food they managed to bring us separate printed bills. Very much in heaven. Guess it is a German thing to get excited about such details. :D
After dinner at the restaurant we wanted to check out the pool which is unfortunately not finished yet. (Some floors are already open for business even though the building itself is not finished yet.)
We met the owner/manager of the hotel on the top floor and got a tour of the building site. It turned out that the guy had been to Achen in 1983 and was quite pleased to meet us.

On the following morning
 - after a nice buffet style brekky -
we made our way up to the roof again for some nice shots:

Since it is the last day together:

At some gas station:

Tammy actually drove a few hundred meters.
While she was fine with it - Hashem started to freak about the traffic.
Pointing out in his polite way how crazy traffic is and how he would prefer to drive.
First time it crossed my mind - that I have no idea if we had insurance - guess not.
Also who would have covered for the costs if something had happened?!
It may be mentioned here that we did not sign anything for the rental.
The style things run in Bangladesh is - you know someone, who knows someone, who sorts it out. All you do is hand over the money...

Frequently people would come up to the car to demand money.
He even started a discussed as he was not happy with the amount of money donated to him at first.

Wow an elephant! Hashem stop the car! :D

The elephant came over to the side of the road to be awed by us.

A cute bystander.

The surrounding area:

Feeding the elephant with Baby-Bananas ;D

Yummy!

The highlight of the day - for us the elephant - for the rest the crazy bidesh.

When we wanted to continue our travels the elephant was positioned in front of the car and Taka where demanded for taking pictures. We were told to give the Taka to the elephant who would hand them on to his caretaker. After this failed several time (as elephants are highly intelligent and know one can not eat paper). We somehow paid and got away.

On the ferry on our way back.

A toilet at a gas station on our way back. Most loos look like this one.
Note - for some reason - Bangladeshi like pink bathrooms...

While waiting at the gas station - took us at least 45 min. :s

We made many new friends:
(She is a married Hindu Lady - shown by the red marks)

After a while it sucks to be an attraction...

A flock of wild boars was suddenly driven across the street in front of us! :D

Passed quite a few Brick works on our way.

We arrived in Dhaka late at night. Totally worn out. Traffic is crazy. They drive GTA style here - seriously. He who has the loudest honk dominates. Who breaks first is a pussy. Being it quite an experience I would not do it again. And consider - we travelled comfortably! Having done the same journey in one of the local buses... -_-
