Wednesday, April 23, 2014 - Discover Bali by car - Pura Tanah Lot

Tanah Lot means "Land Sea" and is claimed to be the work of the 16th-century janitor baratha.

 celestial

During his travels along the south coast he saw the rock-island's beautiful setting and rested there. Some fishermen saw him, and bought him gifts. Nirartha then spent the night on the little island. Later he spoke to the fishermen and told them to build a shrine on the rock for he felt it to be a holy place to worship the Balinese sea gods.

The Tanah Lot temple was built and has been a part of Balinese mythology for centuries. The temple is one of seven sea temples around the Balinese coast. Each of the sea temples were established within eyesight of the next to form a chain along the south-western coast.

At the base of the rocky island, poisonous sea snakes are believed to guard the temple from evil spirits and intruders. A giant snake purportedly protects the temple.

In 1980, the temple's rock face was starting to crumble and the area around and inside the temple started to become dangerous. The Japanese government provided a loan to the Indonesian government of approximately USD $130 million to conserve the historic temple and other significant locations around Bali. As a result, over one third of Tanah Lot's "rock" is actually cleverly disguised artificial rock created during the Japanese-funded and supervised renovation and stabilization program.

The highlight of my day!

Was only toped by the fact that my travel mates had waited for me with dinner. So we went together and had a lovely time. So *happy*. I love it when you can leave each other some space and still be together...

Wednesday, April 23, 2014 - Discover Bali by car - Gitgit waterfall

Of to Gitgit waterfalls - height about 40 meters.

Man I was pissed! We arrived at the falls and my driver suggested to take a guide to see them. I asked the guide how much it would be which was about 15 EUR. Knowing the entrance fee to the area is 3 EUR (checked it online before) I asked a girl coming towards us if she would recommend me to take a guide. She said no8, since the path is like shown below. You basically just walk right up to the falls. When at the entrance I refused to have a guide they still wanted to have a fee of 5 EUR. I got angry - told them not to take me as stupid and paid the 3 EUR due. It is not about the money - I would have paid 10 EUR to see the falls - if that is the price for everyone. What I hate is if people try to rip you off just because yo are a foreigner.

Met some beautiful people who had fun bathing in the pool,

as well as some climber in wet suits coming back from conquering the falls.

Wednesday, April 23, 2014 - Discover Bali by car - Twin Lakes - Buyan Lake

Twin Lakes - Buyan Lake is a smallest lake in Bali located just a next door of Tamblingan Lake. It is located in the plateau area with cool weather cover it. It is situated in the high land with hill and rain forest surrounds it. Since the location in the plateau area, the fog is usually blanketing the area.

Being lazy or not knowing my guide brought me to the wrong spot to look at the twin lakes. So I had the chance to have a look at the less nice sites.

My car for the day - in love with the colour!

Some random temple - no entry fee and not a person in sight.

Wednesday, April 23, 2014 - Discover Bali by car - Pura Ulun Danu Bratan

Pura Ulun Danu Bratan is a major Shivaite and water temple. The temple complex is located on the shores of Lake Bratan in the mountains near Bedugul.

Lake Bratan is known as the Lake of Holy Mountain due to the fertility of this area. Located 1200 m above sea level, it has a cold tropical climate.

The 11 stories of pelinggih meru dedicated for Shiva and his consort Parvathi.

Built in 1663, this temple is used for offerings ceremony to the Balinese water, lake and river goddess Dewi Danu, due to the importance of Lake Bratan as a main source of irrigation in central Bali.

So US-style! :D

Still wonder about this one...

Well it is said - wherever there is a beautiful spot - a German can be found...
