Friday, January 24, 2014 - part II - Bangla movie night

After moving my boxes it was time to get ready for Bangla movie night. A Bangla movie follow by Bangla dinner and the obligation to turn up in an Bangla outfit.

Brick Lane is a 2007 British drama film which tells the story of a Nazneen, who grew up in rural Bangladesh. At 17 she has an arranged marriage to a man, who is twice her age. They soon move to Brick Lane in London, the center of the British Bangladeshi community. She leaves behind her sister and her family home.
Married to a man she does not love, Nazneen lives vicariously through the letters she receives from her sister about her carefree life. The film picks up the story after Nazneen and her husband have lived in a small flat for 16 years and been raising 2 daughters.
Nazneen becomes filled with desire for a young, good-looking clothing worker who visits her flat, and they have an affair. The movie takes place following the 9/11attacks on the United States and reflects a period of heightened racial tensions in Britain as well. The Bangladeshi Muslim community was becoming increasingly religious.

Friday, January 17, 2014 - get together at Salma's place

Kicked off the day by strolling around the water between Gulshan (my quarter) and the next one called Baridhara. To get there I walked through Gulshan Ladies Park, where they were filming Bangla girls dancing - lucky me! :)

some street corner in Baridhara

a small Mosque

A flower which was handed to me by an police officer ("For you Miss!") which freaked me out. Was this pure kindness or a signal - a political one or just one of any kind?!

Something to unite us all

I walked through a Slum all by my self to get from one bride to another one. Brave or plain stupid is the question. Curiosity would be the answer.

Art?

A get together of colleagues to commemorate the end of a year and the beginning of a new one - this occasion is a constant even though the faces attending change...

Saturday, January 11, 2014 - Walk along the river

Weekend - some time to enjoy the hood! :D

This is how a telecommunication shop looks. So if you wanna top up your mobile phone credit you just stop by and decide on the amount... 20ct, 50ct or even a full EUR which is about 1000 Taka.

For evolving countries like Bangladesh an affordable & working mobile network is most valuable and enables people to to things, which were not possible or only under certain risks. Here a link to an article written by a friend (Samia, you met her in earlier posts) about how to use text messages to transfer money safe and easily: Artikel im Magazin Kulturaustausch

Some goats lazing about.

No life without air con possible!

Pretty ain't it?

Well this is kind of ironic. A local stove covered by an Burger advertisement.

A house by the river - what more could one want?

Well...

Two worlds:

Met these three cheeky buggers - to cute - and real persistent.

...

Helps to get through the day - feel free to contact your local dealer.

What's the point?

There are pretty views if one tries hard enough to catch them.

Local wast disposal.

There is only one way - up!

Something pretty (rare) on the way home:

My beloved - had to take a bath today... (Yeah I am doing well. ;) )

Well - you do not go and just do things in Bangladesh...
So if you have to pay the Internet bill - you do not have a standing order.
If you have no bank account as most do - you go to the office and pay it cash...
So luxuriously Reyhan (the rickshaw-drive) brought me to the tower.
I was lucky to get up to the 6th floor - as I realised later.
Going up I was surprised to find some floors-buttons missing...

Well when I wanted to go down again I realised in Bangladesh there is only one way to go
and that is up...

Well maybe there is no panel at all...

or there are no buttons one could push...

... well never mind I just take the stairs...
There are signs in Dhaka to remind people how important safety at work is.Well never mind - lets hope there is just not gonna be a fire.Or maybe that is the wrong train of thoughts either I should be glad that the hose is still there orthat one has been installed at all. (Do not mean to be sarcastic here.)

Doing things in a suit is just cool.
